What is Kali?
This is a question I would have answered very differently a couple of years ago. I would have said the Hindu Goddess of Time, Creation, Destruction and Power...that would be the end.
Today if you ask me the same question my answer will be vastly different. I may never stop talking and an impromptu class will probably happen, because it is so much easier to show you rather than explain it in words.
LOL ... lets get real, I have different answers for different types of people
To a fellow Martial Artist:
The Art of Blade, Kali is a Filipino Indiginous Combative Art. It is a practical combative art that has been battle tested over centuries in the Philippines and passed down from generation to generation. The Inheritor/Keeper of Pekiti Tiersia Kali (PTK) is Grand Tuhon Supremo Leo Gaje Jr. Kali utilizes combative geometry with bladed weapons such as a sword, knife and the open hand. It is not only strong, powerful and destructive, but inherently graceful and beautiful.
No matter what background of Martial Arts you do, Kali pairs well and is a great continuing education. You should try it and see!
To a woman (without a martial arts background):
Kali is the BEST! It's a martial art, but it's like a dance that is powerful and has purpose. It doesn't matter how big you are if you are smart and you know what to do. Being fluid and precise is more important than brute force. It's like a combative chess match. Being smart, developing muscle memory and thinking ahead make a huge impact. It's empowering. It's challenging. And most of all, it's a lot of fun. You should come try it. Don't worry, you don't have to know anything. I will show you, and we will laugh all the time.
To parents looking for a martial art for their kids:
Most people have a general concept of what Karate or Tae Kwon Do. It is what most people think of when they think of Martial Arts. Tae Kwon Do is actually my first martial art, and it will always have a special place in my heart. However, I didn't know Kali existed then. It has now become my passion!
Kali 4 Kids is a progressive curriculum that uses the Filipino Martial Art of Kali to make the fundamentals of self-defense accessible to children, and to help them develop the qualities of leadership, confidence, empathy, respect. But Kali 4 Kids goes beyond the typical martial arts classes, because we also focus on creativity and critical thinking. The Learn to Teach, Teach to Learn concept instantly transforms a student into a leader and deepens their level of understanding by having them teach one another. The ability to share knowledge uplifts the art.
To other Athletes (without a martial arts background):
Kali increases hand-eye coordination, speed, and agility. Both sides of the brain are worked equally allowing the brain/muscle connection to strengthen. It is excellent cross-training for almost any sport, with the added benefit of skills that can potentially protect you or your family in a life threatening situation.
